Gig at Slouch!

Pablo Eskimo play Slouch – Bath Street

The plan of the day was a simple one. I, PabloAlaine had to finish work, pick up Chris, drive to the other side of Glasgow to pick up my new car, come home, get ready and then head out to the gig at Slouch on Bath Street.

It should have been easy, but here’s what happened. I finished work, drove to the petrol station to pump up my ever-deflating tyres of my old car for the last time, and drove home.

Big tick for that part of the story. This however is where everything goes tits up.

I then realize that I have absolutely no petrol…..like, the petrol light had been on since I got in the car that morning and the dial is now hovering some distance below the red line. So I drive to the petrol station to put the minimum amount possible in my car. Chris goes in and pays for it and we set off to pick up the brand spanking new car.

We get to good old ‘nameless car company’ in Pollock and I say goodbye to my lovely, but terribly high maintenance Streetka roadster, leaving it in the car park. I then go in to meet the sales guy to sign the documents. All I needed to do was hand over my bank card to prove who I was. The problem? I no longer have my purse in my possession. It’s not in my bag, it’s not in the car I’ve just driven in, it’s nowhere. Great! So now I’ve lost my purse AND I have no proof of who I am.

To cut a long story short, after a lot of apologies I got my car, and with the roof off I drove it back up the road. It was now 7pm. I was meant to be at Slouch at 7. Damn.

We just happen to drive past the petrol station where I stopped for petrol and, lo and behold, right in the middle of the busy road is my mauled purse. It seems that I had taken my purse out when getting petrol but when Chris went to pay for it my subconscious had decided that I was going to leave my purse on top of the car, right next to the petrol cap. It must have fallen off as I turned into the road and then been hit by a billion cars because now everything, including my bank card and, ingeniously, my SIM from my phone that I’d sent earlier on to get repaired, was damaged beyond repair.

Smashin’

Finally I make my way to Slouch and by the time I meet up with everyone else I’m in that crazy/frantic way I get when lots of things happen in a small amount of time. Time for some good music and a chill out before we go on stage.

The first band of the night was the Alchonauts, and I must say they were impressive, even minus their bass player! Fancy a bit of Funky, Punky craziness?? Oh I think so! They played their set at breakneck speed, playing 4 songs in a row without a halt while still managing to keep the groove. Hats off sirs, an excellent performance!

Next it was us. After having a smoke outside we took to the stage and decided to up the pace that the Alchonauts had set. We don’t know why if I’m being honest. Sometimes that just happens and I wouldn’t usually mind, but after the first three tunes I was starting to feel like a marathon runner with an emphysema problem. Time to cool it down with a slower number……and then bring it back up again for the rest of the set. Thankfully the crowd hadn’t noticed that we were playing with the fast forward button on continuously and we were met with much appreciation! The vibe in the place was brilliant!

Next on were the Ratistas. With a host of banging ska tunes and an impressive masturbation-esque performance at the end, these guys packed more than a satisfying punch. Song after song was filled with energy to the point where you got exhausted just looking at them on stage!

And then to finish off the night, there was an impromptu session with Johnboy on drums, me on bass and Miss MC mixing it up with some impressive rhymes. It was the first time we’d all met, the first time Miss MC had been on a stage even….and it worked. A perfect end to a fantastic evening. Good people, great tunes and a phenomenal vibe.

Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together?
